Free Software Utilities

The software titles below are utilities that ITS believes some faculty, staff and students may find useful.  These utilities are free alternatives to some popular software packages that are currently available for purchase at many retail establishments. Even though these utilities are free, please make sure to read the licensing agreements. ITS does not support the titles listed below and is not responsible for any hardware or software issues caused by downloading and installing these utilities.

Libre Office
LibreOffice is a comprehensive, professional-quality productivity suite that you can download and install for free, with no fear of copyright infringement. LibreOffice includes applications to create documents, spreadsheets, slideshow presentations and more.

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

A free light-weight screenshot tool optimized for productivity.

7-zip is an open source Windows file-compression utility for manipulating archives. It fully supports 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR formats, and has the capability to unpack other formats.

VLC Player
VLC Player is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and supports various streaming protocols.

Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw, using the standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.). It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more.

PDF Creator
PDFCreator is a free PDF converter tool that allows the creation of PDF documents from virtually any application.
