Canning Spam
Last night around 10:30 pm a user account from campus dished out spam. The email gateway tasted it and immediately choked. (Who wouldn't! Have you ever tried spam? It is really salty.) ITS had to determine which of the over 3,500 email accounts was serving up this tasty dish. We identified the offending account and immediately canned the spam. Everything was back to normal, whatever that is, by 11:30 pm However, thousands of emails were sent around the world and we will suffer some back lash for this such as being blacklisted by some ISP's or other organizations. ITS will deal with this as needed.
Access to the compromised account was achieved by using the individual's login and password. Please do not provide your login or password to anyone on or off campus. ITS staff will never ask for your login or password.
When you login into another site where you are asked to provide your login and/or password make sure that you know that the site is legitimate and that is secure. You can tell if a site uses security if there is a picture of a closed lock on the lower right side on the tray.
