Laptop Use in Classrooms
ITS and Instructional Media have been working together to try to resolve the issue of faculty, staff and students who want to connect a laptop to the classroom projection system.   Most of the time when a laptop is connected to the projection system the equipment is not restored to the original setup when the laptop is disconnected, thus causing the next person to use the system headaches because not much works.

In some rooms the problem was resolved by a wall plate where the laptop computer connects to the projector cable plugged into an outlet on the wall.  That solution would not work for all classrooms and hence a second method for connecting a laptop was needed.

We believe that we have resolved that problem by placing an automatic switching system where the laptop connects to a cable on the computer cart.  Please do not unplug ANY cable from the back of any classroom equipment or from the connection plate on the wall.

Tom has written documentation that explains how to use the new switching system with a laptop.  The link to those instructions is:  http://library.noctrl.edu/instructional_media/laptop.html  If you have any questions please feel to call Instructional Media or ITS.

Photo Roster
ITS has developed a new program that will display the class roster with student photos, if available.  If a photo of the student is not available, a picture of Merlin will be displayed with "Photo not Available."

The link is available on Merlin for faculty after logging in.  It will be listed under NCC Reports, "Class Photo Roster."

Think of this system as similar to having your photo taken for your driver's license---the photo changes only when you get a new driver's license.  The same is true for student photo's---the original photo ID is taken when the student is a freshman and it is not changed until a student needs the ID replaced.

Vision
Vision software is installed in Carnegie 200 and 210.  It gives faculty complete control over classroom computers from an easy-to-use console that shows each student computer screen. Monitor student progress, engage students with on screen demonstrations, control Web browsing and guide student learning from the faculty computer.   If you need instructions on how to use this system, please email the Help Desk.

Wikis and Blogs
As a reminder, ITS can set up wiki's and blogs for classroom use as well as staff use.  We are standardized on DokuWiki for wiki's and WordPress for blogs.  Please email Matt Zanon if you would like to use either software.
