ITS UPDATE: Cluster Messes up GroupWise; A Tree Grows inNaperville

Cluster Messes Up GroupWise Which Messes Up The Cluster Which...
We have been having trouble with the cluster (a group of linked computers) this past week.  Most of the problems revolve around student drives, shared class space, and student web space.  The server for those services is going down every other day.  We will have to rebuild that server which will take about 10 hours---which means 10 hours of down time during which students will not have access to resources.  So to extend the life of the server until we can repair it, we turned off a non-essential resource.  Oops!  It turns out that the non-essential resource caused GroupWise to become extremely slow this morning.  We turned the non-essential resource back on this morning and GroupWise functioning returned to normal.

A Tree Grows in Naperville
As you know last week data packets were being dropped between 999 and campus---this is a wireless connection between Old Main and 999.  The wireless equipment in the Old Main tower failed and had to be replaced.  We believed that the new equipment would resolve the problem. Turns out, that the packets continued to drop even with the new equipment.  We then had to search for another cause for the dropped packets.  Turns out that a tree grew in Naperville between Old Main and 999 and obstructed the wireless signal.  We had to reposition the antenna on 999 by 25 feet so that we had a better line of sight between the two antennas.  There have no dropped packets since realigning the antennas,
