ITS UPDATE: Connections to 999 (Maintenance) Down

Connections to 999 (Maintenance) Down
999 is connected to the main campus over a wireless network.  There is an antenna on the top of Old Main and another on the roof of 999.  It is through this connection that 999 gets it voice and data.  The telephones at 999 are VoIP phones which means that they are connected to the network rather than a land line.  Last week packets of data were being dropped intermittently.  This means once in awhile some of the phone conversations would be dropped; usually for only a few seconds.

ITS staff tried many solutions to resolve the problem but none worked.  Late yesterday afternoon the wireless bridge on Old Main flaked out (a very technical term) and literally dropped all communications with 999.  We  put make shift connections in place late last night.

All phone calls to Betty Wizorek will be routed to the switchboard.  Judy Beskid will then relay the message by radio to Betty.  Betty can see RT Tracker and her email but it is extremely slow.  If you would like to know the speed at which information is being processed, think back to 1995 when you had a dial up modem.

We are looking for a replacement piece of equipment; the cost is around $3,500.  Most of our vendors could not provide the equipment for at least a week.  Advanced Data came to our rescue last night and will be bringing that critical equipment to campus this afternoon.  We will then work with Advanced Data to install the equipment and make sure that the wireless antennas are aligned.

We will let you know when voice and data services to 999 are restored to their normal functioning.

Thank you for your patience during this time.
