ITS UPDATE: Phone System to be Downed; Protect Your Privacy

Phone System to be Downed
As you may recall the uninterrupted power source (UPS) for the telephone system bit the dust after almost 15 years of service.  ITS has researched new telephone UPS's.  Things do change in the tech world after 15 years so any new system will provide us with better information.  A new system must provide at least four hours of battery backup for telephones if electrical power is not available.  Given that, we have purchased an  American Power Company UPS that uses truck batteries to power the phones when electricity is not available.  That was the easy part.

The much harder part will occur on Wednesday, May 27th we need to take the phone system down to install the new UPS.  That work will involve ITS, Maintenance and a Siemens telephone switch technician.  We will start that work at 6 am with the hope that the phone system will be up and running before 8 am.  This time was picked because it has the least impact on the College faculty, staff and students.

Protect Your Privacy
As more and more information is put online, it is making it easier to pull highly detailed and potentially invasive information about you and thus create a virtual profile of you.  The new generation of social search engines does just that and they share it with others.  People search engines get their material about you from many well-known sites, such as Amazon, social networking sites such as Facebook, and music sites such as Pandora.

You can do something about this by going within each individual site's account configuration pages and look for the privacy options to adjust to suit your comfort level.

These are the steps for just a few of the most widely used sites that the people search engines scan:
  • Facebook: Once signed in, look under the 'Settings' tab at the top of the page to find the privacy control panel. Click the Profile option to set parameters regarding who can view your content.
  • MySpace: Click the My Account button at the top of the page after logging in, then click Privacy to adjust your settings. Bear in mind that your age and location are typically displayed publicly even if your profile is set as private.
  • Pandora: Your play lists are public unless you specify otherwise. Once logged in, click Account at the top of the page, and then follow the option to edit your profile info. From there, you'll see a checkbox that you can select to make your profile (and thus your play lists) private.
