Servers Misbehavin'
Last week our main servers froze up and ITS staff worked until 8:30 pm to get them operational. Last night at 12:25 am prod server went into a hard freeze rendering nothing for users. ITS staff worked on prod server and had it up and operational by 7:35 am this morning---just in time for you when you came to work this morning.
I am sure you can recall how slow Web pages and other systems that used the F drive were yesterday. Although it appeared to be a Web problem, it was actually a server problem with the F drive. The new version of Firefox reads from a file on the F drive, as did the old version, however, each time the new version of Firefox reads a Web page, it launches a 25 MB file. The servers should have been able to handle this volume. However, the servers were having a hard time processing that much information and hence slowed way down. We did not fix the problem, but have put in place a work around until we can find out why the server is not serving. Everything now is working very closely to normal.
Ben to Colleague Advancement Conversion
The Advancement Office and ITS have been working on the Benefactor to Colleague Advancement conversion. Currently Datatel is running the equivalent of two systems: Benefactor and Colleague. With this conversion Datatel will work as one system. Of course the steps between require coordination and agreement among users on how data will be used and shared across this new platform. Working with offices across the campus data custodian questions were answered, such as who owns the data?, who updates the source code?, who should view sensitive records?, how is old degree data handled?, etc.
Starting tomorrow, NCC will officially be part of Datatel Cohort H. This cohort is comprised of 13 colleges that will be working through the conversion as a group. The goal for all of these colleges is to complete the Benefactor to Colleague Advancement conversion within the next year. ITS will keep you posted on the progress.
