ITS UPDATE: Password Phishing; FT Faculty PCs

Password Phishing
Due to recent events in which the passwords of faulty, staff and students at various colleges and universities have been compromised due to phishing, ITS would like to remind you that ITS will never ask for your password in an email.  Again, never give out your password.

There are several versions of password phishing going around---one occurred at NCC and the College has been blacklisted on some email systems because of it.  We are working with those systems to get off the black list and onto the white list.  Some mail to District 203 was banned until we could straighten out the issue.

All of the schemes have to do with a person's account, either email or network.   The scheme that succeeded at the College dealt with the size of one's email inbox.  See the scheme below.

Note:  the 20 or {} is where the program would place personal data, like username or name.

You will continue to receive this warning message periodically if your =
inbox size continues to be between 18 and 20 MB. If your inbox size grows =
to 20 MB, then a program on Bates Webmail will move your oldest email to a =
folder in your home directory to ensure that you will continue to be able =
to receive incoming email. You will be notified by email that this has =
taken place. If your inbox grows to 25 MB, you will be unable to receive =
new email as it will be returned to the sender.
After you read a message, it is best to REPLY and SAVE a copy.=20

FT Faculty PCs
ITS will be replacing PCs for all full-time faculty.  Faculty will be receiving the PCs that were used in the classrooms and Carnegie labs, which house the latest PC technology  We will start the process next week and will probably migrate 20 PCs a week. Faculty will be notified approximately one week in advance of the move.  We will be switching PCs out by building.
