Equipment Takes a Holiday Too
Last night, December 20, the equipment in ITS decided to take a holiday
like the rest of us. Around 7 pm the ability to log into any system was
disabled. ITS staff responded to the call and within an hour you could
once again log into all systems; but access to drive space was not
possible. What happeded was the main production server tanked. That is
where all the LDAP authentication takes place so that you can log into
all NCC technology systems. ITS staff were able to redirect the LDAP
authentication to another server while they looked for the culprit on
the downed server.
The main problem turned out to be a hardware failure. The hard drive on
the production server was in operable. Thankfully, we had a spare then
drive available and were able to replace the inoperable hard drive with
one that was working. Then the hard drive then had to be rebuilt so
that all the programs and services were available on it. That process
was completed by 10:30 pm. All systemns are back up and running as
normal.
