ITS UPDATE: New Wireless Hot Spots; Computer Classroom Control;Digital Signage Prototype; HP Cartridge Increase

New Wireless Hot Spots
New wireless hot spots have been added to the resident hall lounges in the following buildings: Rall, Seager, Student Village, Townhomes, Geiger, Ward, Patterson, and Kimmel.  Wireless access has also been added to the Pfeiffer stage area.

Computer Classroom Control
Hate having students surf the web in a computer lab while you are trying to teach?  No more!  We have found a solution called Vision Classroom Management Software.  With Vision, an instructor has complete control over student computers from an easy-to-use device. You can demonstrate lessons directly on student computer screens, supervise computer use, monitor on-line activity and lock keyboards and mice during presentations to focus student attention.

We have outfitted Carnegie lab 200 and 210 with this software.  It is easy to use.  As you can see it has 5 buttons that you can press: My Classroom, Demo, Blank, Surf-Lock and Stop.   If you would like to learn how to use this device please contact the Help Desk.  It will take less than 10 minutes to learn.  If we get positive feedback on this software, we will install it in other computer labs.

Digital Signage Prototype
Working with the Admission office, ITS has installed a prototype of digital signage.  A 42" flat panel LCD monitor with speakers has been installed in the Admission lobby.  The monitor automatically turns itself on and off; adjusts itself given light conditions and displays information on a schedule.  At the present time, the names of prospective students appear along with some campus photos.  ITS will be training Admission and Marketing staff on how to use the software called SWiSH Max which allows users to create Flash presentations easily.

Toner Cartridge Price Increase
There has been a price increase in HP toners and inkjet cartridges.  The price increase does not effect our GT brand of recycled cartridges.   The HP price increase has been between 8 and 10% depending on the toner.  If you are willing to buy 2 packs the price per tone is cheaper.  The cost of inkjet cartridges has gone up also.  The increase for inkjet cartridges is less than 5% and you can order 2 packs for a price break of around 5%.
