ITS UPDATE: Email to be Downed; Virus; Sirens

Email to be Downed Saturday
Yesterday we had a problem with the email server and a corrupted file slowed email processing. We had a similar problem the week before.   ITS staff need to examine the email system in great detail.  While this examination is being conducted faculty and staff will not be able to access their email.  ITS will start the process Saturday, August 2 in the morning.  It could take up to eight hours to run the diagnostics.  As soon as we can we will restore access.  No email will be lost during this process.

Virus
A new virus is circulating on campus that is pretending to be an antivirus program.  It is called "Antivirus 2008" or "Vista Antivirus 2009."    This is a zipped file that the user opens and installs.  It then installs to a folder and runs process that will count fake viruses and then tell you to download their software.  It may also change the desktop wallpaper to say your computer has been infected and you need spyware or antivirus software.

There is no need for anyone to download and install any antivirus application on a College owned computer as ITS takes care of all antivirus applications.  As always, you should not open files that you are not familiar with.

Sirens
Business Operations, Campus Safety, and ITS have been working together to identify an outdoor siren warning system that can be used for severe weather notification and/or in case of an emergency.  Late in the morning of Wednesday, August 6 you may be hearing sirens as we are having a vendor bring their loud speakers so we can test their capabilities outdoors and indoors.
