ITS UPDATE: More Wireless; One Card; More T-1 Lines; CellPhone Subscribers

More Wireless Access Points
The CCIW is moving towards requiring Live Stats for football and men and women's basketball this fall; actually any sport that may share those facilities. The CCIW is also considering baseball as a requirement for live stats.   The implication for North Central is that we have to provide Internet access at those facilities to allow our Sports Information Director (SID) to create live statistics of games.  We also need to provide Internet access to the visiting team's SID.

Given this, ITS has installed wireless access points in Merner Field House, Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium and Zimmerman Stadium.  Wireless access has a radius of 300' so additional wireless access in those areas will be available for use by students, faculty and staff.

ITS has also installed a wireless access point in the Pfeiffer Hall stage area.  This will allow people to use the network without having to string a 30' cable across the stage floor.

Hopefully this summer we will be installing more wireless access points on campus and as we install them we will inform you.

One-Card System
The College recently signed a contract with CBORD for CS Gold; a campus one-card system.  It is an integrated ID card software system that has a wide range of applications, feature-rich data exchange capabilities, and easy-to-use graphical interface.  The components purchased are: CS Access: an IP door access control system; CS Action Management and Response Management: automates specified procedure call when an alarm is triggered (e.g,, lock doors, activate alarm functions, email and call officers on duty); CS Meal Plans: it will replace BlackBoard which Chartwell's uses for meal plans; CS Entitlements: ticketing, voting privileges, special program admittance, etc.; CS Stored Value and Credit: allows for debit/credit plans for vending, bookstore, laundry machines, and off-campus purchasing; and CS Card Link: ID card production.

The first phase of the project starts tomorrow and will last most of the summer.  The first phase of the project involves all the current buildings with card access to be retrofitted to handle the CBORD system and Carnegie to be outfitted with swipe card access to make it available 24/7 for student use of the computer labs.  Also the FAC and WAC will be set up to use this card access system.  In addition, Chartwell's will move from BlackBoard to CBORD for its meal plans and processing of food sales.  Updates will follow as we move forward with this project.

More T-1 Lines
Use of the Internet is shifting to more video etc. thus increasing the need for bandwidth.  Currently the College has 14 T-1 lines that are being maxed out during the academic year.  During the next three months ITS will be adding more Internet capacity.  It costs the College $72,000 a year to provide Internet access; and this is at an educational discount rate.

Cell Phone Subscribers
Cell phone subscribers can list their numbers on the Do-Not-Call Registry if they so desire by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone number they wish to register.  It does provide a small additional measure of protection.  Registrations become effective within 31 days of signing up and are active for five years.  This information is directly from the Federal Trade Commission.
