On Thursday, September 6, a new version of the Office 07 Suite will be pushed out to all campus PC's.
We have scheduled four training sessions for faculty and staff on September 6 in Carnegie 210 for the following times:
8:30 -- 10:00 a.m.
10:00 -- 11:30 a.m.
1:00 -- 2:30 p.m.
2:30 -- 4:00 p.m.
The lab can accommodate up to 25 users for hands-on training, but if you would like to simply come and observe, we could fit an additional 10 people in the space (standing room only). If you would like to sign up for a training session, please email Alice Stonebraker ( ahstonebraker@noctrl.edu) and indicate your time preference and whether or not you want a hands-on or observational reservation--first come, first served.
The workshop will cover all the new features in Word, some of which, like the ribbon shown below, are transferrable to the other applications contained in the Office 07 suite (such as Excel and PowerPoint). We will have a handout and you will be given the opportunity to experiment with your own files and apply some of the new features available.
While we think this training would be beneficial for those who use Word extensively, if it is not possible for you to attend a session, please read the information below as it will help you get started in the new version. The look may be different, the functionality is the same, only better. For example, all the old keyboard shortcuts from Office 03 also work in Office 07; however, there are many more shortcuts in Office 07. Another exciting new feature of this version is "live preview" that allows the author to see how the look of a document can instantly change just by mousing over the options available.
When you open Word, this is the screen you will see (you may have to scroll at the bottom of this email to the right to see the entire ribbon). Each tab will reveal a new set of commands. At the upper right corner of the Home tab is button. This is where you can go to get help with any item not readily apparent to you in the tab sets. It's a great feature in the Office Suite.
The File Menu has been replaced by this button .
As you can see below, this Office button contains the basic features you will need to start a new document, open an existing document, save, print or close a document.
Effective September 6, copies of Office 07 may be requested from Cathy Frakes (x5438) in ITS for loading on your home PC. Remember documents created in any Office 07 product will not be compatible with earlier versions of the software. So, if you want to work at home with documents that you have created in your campus office and you do not yet have Office 07 loaded on your home computer, you will need to save as a Word 97-2003 Document (it's a choice on the Save menu).
We'll hope you'll join us (Kathy Wilders and Alice Stonebraker) at one of the sessions offered on September 6. |
