Visio and/or Microsoft Project
Microsoft changed its licensing agreement for Colleges (charge more get less) so that you no longer get Visio and Microsoft Project as part of the package. ITS would like to ensure that the individuals that use this software (in class or in their office) have the latest version. We are exploring how to address this problem but before we can finalize anything we need to know who needs/uses this software. Please email the Help Desk and list which of the above software you need.
GWAVA
By managing your GWAVA Restriction Digest you are helping GWAVA learn what is spam and what is not spam. The more information you provide it the better it will get and thereby reduce the amount of false positive emails and spam you will have in the future.
You can also help us mange spam even more by dumping all the spam that GWAVA misses into a Shared Spam Folder that ITS has created. All you would have to do is drag the spam that GWAVA misses to this folder. ITS is then using this information to feed GWAVA so that it improves its ability to detect spam. If you are interested in helping us out, please email the Help Desk and we will add the Shared Spam Folder to your GroupWise Cabinet.
If you don't want to deal with the hourly GWAVA messages (now running between 6 a.m. and midnight) you can create a rule that will move all those messages to a folder. By doing this, you can deal with those messages when you so desire.
GWAVA is the best way to ensure that you get less spam; a short term pain for a long term gain. If we keep just the old system that we use to manage spam we can guarantee you more spam in the future.
PC Roll Out
The PC roll out is now behind schedule due to rain and having to move people and PCs unexpectedly. We had 488 PCs to move and we have installed Windows XP on 175 PCs for people to date. This week we plan on moving another 180 PCs. We will have 135 PCs left to move after this week. Next week we have to set up the new MAC lab and work area in Meily-Swallow Hall so that will again slow down the process. ITS staff must also get he labs ready for fall term classes and get the CD which helps eliminates viruses and network shutdowns ready for students when they start arriving Sept. 5. I'm sure we don't want to go back to the good old days when the first freshman arrived on campus and the network shut down. Again, we cannot roll out Office 2007 until all PCs are cascaded and have Windows XP installed on them.
Office 2007
The first day that Office 2007 is rolled out ITS will provide training sessions which we believe will last about 90 minutes apiece; we are still trying to figure out what we need to cover. We plan to offer them all day. These sessions will provide basic information on how to use the new ribbon interface and where things are hidden as well as some new features. With these basics people should be able to use Office Suite, but it will take time to get to the efficiency that you now have with it.
Digital Cable TV
This project continues to inch forward. The first day that resident students can sign up digital TV will be August 29th. Freshman will be able to sign up on Sept. 5 and returning students on Sept. 10. Frankly, I wish I could get my digital TV service for the price that ITS negotiated for our resident students. Students who stopped by the ITS Office for other reasons and saw the brochure for the new digital service gave it a thumbs up.
Datatel R18
North Central College came up on Datatel Release 18 on Monday. There were minor problems, as is normal with technology, but no show stoppers. The Datatel team is working to resolve minor issues. ITS staff have been working for the past 18 months to make this migration. R18 involved structural changes to the system and software. Basically, we had to rewrite all of our custom code as well as make operational and system changes to the HP on which Datatel resides, and install a new HP. We'd like to thank all the offices that identified and tested programs during this time frame as you helped make this a success!
