ITS UPDATE: Email Liability; Email Trash; Internet Traffic
|
Email Liability
In December the Federal Government issued an amendment to the data retention policy stating that email is discoverable. What does this mean to you? The fact that email always provides a searchable record means that you can be held accountable for electronic correspondence. And, further that your emails are subject to subpoena. May I remind you of Enron and the emails that were subpoenaed and used in court and the unfortunate incident at Benedictine University regarding 9/11. In fact, a fellow college has been subpoenaed and is currently in the process of identifying emails that were sent and received on certain topics.
In general, email is not appropriate for transmitting sensitive or confidential information unless an appropriate level of security matches its use for such purposes. The email system is not designed to be a record retention system and your email may be subject to subpoena. Please, for your own protection, clean up your email
Email Trash
This weekend ITS will be automatically deleting any email that is located in your email "Trash" bin that is 30 days old or older. There is so much trash that we cannot empty it all at once or it will still be processing long after the weekend is complete.
Internet Traffic
Everybody knows that Internet traffic is ever increasing. Do you know how the Internet is being used at NCC? ITS has analyzed Internet traffic for the week of April 19 through April 26. We analyzed 96% of the Internet traffic.
- 93.54% of the Internet traffic was normal Web use;
- 2.94% of the Internet traffic was streaming;
- 2.7% of the traffic was for gaming;
- 0.56% of the Internet traffic was used for messaging; and
- 0.26% of the Internet traffic was used for file transfer.
