Network/Email
Although most of you did not notice (some of you did) the network was not functional at 2:30 am on Thursday. All of our servers for the network, email etc. tanked. We set up a cluster just to prevent this from happening; oh well in the tech world everything is not perfect. Our SAN (storage areas network) also was down and we do not know if the problem was caused by the SAN or the cluster. By 7:30 am everything was back up and running. Our fingers are crossed hoping that this does not occur again; after all who wants to get up at 2:30 am on a work day.
800 Numbers
Gremlins must be in our systems because late Wednesday the College's 800 numbers were not working. The problem was repaired by Thursday at noon. At least it had nothing to do with ITS configurations. It was a problem with our long distance vendor, VarTech, who had to replace and reseat a routing card.
Web 2.0
Yes, the Web does come in versions. Most of us are still stuck in the Web 1.0 world. Today's students are already thriving in the Web 2.0 world. Three years ago Web 2.0 was introduced to the world. Any site, service, or technology that promotes sharing and collaboration comprises Web 2.0. It is often called "social networking," and includes blogs and wikis, tags and RSS feeds, del.ico.us, Flickr, MySpace, YouTube, Second Life, folksonomies and podcasts. Don't think our students are involved? You would be wrong! They do and say things publicly that most of us would never dream of doing or saying. For example, there is a group of students who have a fan club for Howard Mueller, David Fisher and Rich Wilders (all the same site; don't know the name, an interesting grouping). They even have pictures of the three of them together that have been composited. Of course the site that I like is "Rich Wilders is one of the reasons I enjoy living." No, I did not create the site but some of our students did. By the way, I am not a member :-) Around the corner is Web 3.0. I can only imagine what it will be like. |
