Web Site
At 1 am Saturday morning the Web Server decided to bolt the corral. By 9 am we got the beast back into the fold. However, it is a stubborn mule and at 8 pm Saturday it decided to crash again. It was brought back into the fold by 9 pm. The problem is an issue between Apache Tomcat (a web container that implements the servelt and the JavaServer Pages providing an environment for Java code to run in cooperation with a web server; I'm sure that cleared it up for you) and our CMS (content management system). Errors are invoked that the user never sees; but we do and this fills our log files which in turn shuts the server down. We are working to resolve the issue on a permanent basis but so far our research has not provided an optimum solution.
GroupWise
Not to be out done; GroupWise took a dump at 9 pm on Sunday. It was back up and running at 10 pm; we did not lose any email. This is an SSL Web mail problem and our attempts to remedy the situation have proved fruitless. We are contacting Novell and will pay them to help us resolve the issue. Hopefully they can do what we could not---there is no guarantee.
Web Cam
ITS is setting up a Web Cam to show progress on the Fine Arts Center. Plant Op built a special housing to enclose the camera and we have mounted it in our house on E. Jefferson. It will sit there until late Feb. when it will be moved to another location because all that will be visible from that location by then will be a 70 foot wall.
CMS
Good news and bad news on this migration. We are currently on version 4.1 and trying desperately to migrate to version 5.2 (so far we have been working on this for 5 months) which solves many problems and provides enhanced resources for users. However, we have discovered that the "Check In" problem that plagues 4.1 has not been resolved. We are reluctant to move to 5.2 unless this issue is resolved. We are contacting Ingeniux, the software company that wrote the program, to get them to do a site audit. We are now having great discussions on whose problem it is. We may migrate to version 4.2 and then hopefully have the issue resolved so we can migrate to version 5.2.
MoSoSo
This is one of the latest acronyms in the ever evolving technology world. The term is short for "mobile social-networking software." It is the latest trend and describes cellphones' ever-increasing ability to combine social-networking tools (like text messaging, Facebook) with global positioning software. It provides tools that let people track their friends' whereabouts in real time. Several colleges have already offered this capability to their students. |
