Firefox et al Updates
Tomorrow when you log into your computer new versions of Firefox, Flash, Java and QuickTime will be installed. The process should take about 20 minutes and at the completion you will be asked to reboot your computer. Please call the Help Desk at x5440 if you have any problems with the install.
Clean Slate
Clean Slate ( a software disk protector) is being installed on all classroom PCs and on all lab PCs. Students are downloading software to PCs and many times when the next user logs on the PC it does not function as intended. Clean Slate prevents the original files from being modified as it caches all unwanted changes and when the computer is rebooted or a user logs off it discards the cached changes.
End of Year Blues
Part I
At approximately 1:30 pm on Monday, December 19 an AT&T crew that was relocating phones cut into the campus backbone that feeds the Stadium, Merner Field House and the Blue House. All network and cable TV services to those buildings are down. So, if you expect people on the south end of campus to respond to email or to connect with Datatel, best estimates are that it will not happen until the end of the day on Friday, December 29th.
Approximately 750 feet of fiber optic cable is damaged; see picture below. Special splicing equipment and single mode and multimode fiber are needed to repair the damage. The cable will be delivered today and then work will commence on the repair. The estimate of damage is $20,000.
Part II
On Wednesday of last week when the College was closed Web Access to email went down. The system was down about 15 minutes. On Thursday of last week the College was hit with a massive spam that pegged the mail processor and slowed email delivery to a crawl. The system was cleared and email resumed delivery at a normal pace later in the day. |
