Important Message from ITS

Important Message from ITS

Welcome to fall term 2006.  The ITS staff wishes you success in your studies.

ITS has been busy ensuring that you have effective and reliable technology service.  We have worked with Student Government to monitor student concerns with voice video and data.  Over the summer we have made a significant number of changes and improvements.

Changes and improvements that may affect you include:

*      In order to ensure that you have sufficient bandwidth for your academic endeavors ITS has doubled the capacity of our Internet feed from 5 T-1 lines to 10.

*      Full wireless access is now available in Oesterle Library, Roland Center Boilerhouse Café, White Activities Center, and Kaufman Dinning Hall.  Outside areas with wireless access are the main spine of campus from Oesterle Library to Carnegie Hall the north side of Seagar Hall and the south side of Ward Hall.

*      Wireless hot spots are now located in lounge areas of Carnegie Hall, Goldspohn Hall, Kiekhofer Hall, Kroehler Science Center, and Larrance Academic Center.

*      New 17" flat panel monitors have been installed in the teaching labs in Carnegie Hall.

*      A new Super Lab has been created in Carnegie Hall 211.  25 brand new iMAC computers with 18" screens have been purchased and installed.  The computers are dual boot which means that they can be used as either a MAC or a PC.  In addition 8 copies of Final Cut Pro for the MAC are now available on the iMACs on the north end of the lab.

*      14 additional PC stations have been added in Oesterle Library.

*      All the PCs in the Writing Center have been upgraded and increased by 3.  There is also new software on 3 PCs for help with study skills and graduate placement test prep.

*      ITS is now responsible for local telephone service and you no longer have to use PIN numbers and deal with Resicom when you have problems.   North Central College is now providing each residence hall room with free local (both on campus and off) telephone service.

*      Long distance calls can be made with a phone card.  ITS has provided each resident with a free phone card good for 10 minutes of calls.

*      The old voice mail system has now been replaced with a Unified Messaging system.  If you do not pick up your phone call a voice message will be sent to your GroupWise email account.  You can program a call so that it can be transferred to your cell phone.

*      The bandwidth limit originally set to 250 MB per day is now set to 500 MB per day.  You can see how much bandwidth you are using by going to the ITS website at its.noctrl.edu and clicking on the link "Check you bandwidth usage."  Green means that you are within limits yellow means that you are close to going over the limit red means that you have gone over the limit and deep red means that you have exceeded the limit by a lot.

Reminders:

*      If you would like a gaming port open send an email to ITS at helpdesk@noctrl.edu listing the port and its primary use.  ITS staff will check it out and determine whether or not it can be opened.

*      If you are bringing a computer to campus you need to complete the port activation form found at http:/its.noctrl.edu/students/port_registration If you do not complete the online port activation form within two weeks your port will be deactivated.  You will then have to visit the ITS Office in Carnegie Hall to have your port activated.

*      There are two ports per room. If there are three people in a room and you need an additional port for the third PC please email the Help Desk at helpdesk@noctrl.edu

*      To ensure that all resident students have access to the network and the Internet, only NCC owned, installed and managed wireless access points are allowed in the residence halls.

ITS staff are here to help you with your technology problems.  We are located in Carnegie Hall 110 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  You can also reach us by sending an email to helpdesk@noctrl.edu; or calling the Help Desk at x5440. ResNets can help you with your PC problems in a residence hall.  To call a ResNet, dial 6441 from any phone and campus and follow the prompts.  Also please check our Web site for information.
