What is ResNet?
ResNet is a group of student workers who assist students living
on campus or in university owned housing to connect directly to
the campus network. From there, students can access a wide variety
of network services including e-mail, the library systems, and the Internet.
How much does it cost?
ResNet is free to students living the residence halls.
Where do I plug in?
Every residence hall room is equipped with at least one Ethernet
jack per person living in the room. The jacks are slightly larger than the phone jacks in the
room.
What kind of cable do I need to
connect?
To connect to the NCC Network you will need a Cat V Ethernet cable.
You can obtain a free six foot cable from ITS or your Resnet Consultant.
You can purchase
a 25'
cable
for $7.00 from ITS (Cathy Frakes, Carnegie 110), or you can buy
them from most computer and office supply stores.
Does ResNet provide cables?
Yes, a six foot cable will be provided upon request. To obtain
a cable please contact your Res Hall Resnet at extension 6441.
You can also pick one up from ITS (Carnegie 110).
Do I need to call someone when
I move in to turn it on (or call someone when I leave to turn it off)?
Before Fall Ethernet ports are set up across campus to be immediately
accessible. Students do not need to call have their connection
turned on or off, they do,
however, need to notify ITS that their port is in use. This can
be done by going to the port activation page from http://its.noctrl.edu.
If this is not done within one week, your port will be shut off.
What are the minimum requirements
my computer must meet to get onto ResNet?

Does ResNet have a firewall?
For protection against tampering and intrusion of student's computers,
NCC has a firewall to guard against attacks outside of the college.
Most services typically used are still accessible. Those that are
not include are file transfers for AIM, ICQ, and IRC.
I can't connect or my connection
went down. What do I do now?
If your connection goes down, the problem could be either your
computer or your Ethernet connection. If you do not know how to fix your computer
or suspect it is your connection to the NCC Net, you can contact ResNet
at x6441.
Is my computer secure (safe from
intrusion) while on the network?
Your computer is relatively safe from attacks outside the college
(no connection can be completely safe). To avoid misuse of your computer
from students within campus do not share files over the network. If you
suspect that you may be inadvertently sharing files contact ResNet at extension 6441.
Do I call ResNet regarding my
username and password?
If you do not know or are having trouble with your username and/or
password, call Information Technology Services (ITS) at extension
5440.
I live in a Residence Hall. The
Ethernet jack is across the room from my computer. Will ResNet change the Ethernet jack location for me?
ResNet will not change the location of a jack in The Res Halls.
If the resident wishes, they can purchase a longer ethernet cable and run it to
the computer.
Tampering with the Ethernet jack may result in fines and/or discontinuation
of
NCC Network services.
Will ResNet come and install my
ethernet card for me?
Yes. ResNet will install ethernet cards in computers that meet
the
minimum
requirements.
How do I contact the ResNet consultant
responsible for my Res Hall?
Dial extension 6441 and follow the prompts to reach the voicemail
of the ResNet in
charge of your Res Hall. Once you have entered the mailbox leave
a brief message
that contains your name, your Res Hall and room number, your extension
and an
explanation of the problem. The ResNets have designated times when
they check the
voicemail, they will return your call and set up an appointment
as soon as possible.
Does ResNet maintain the computer
labs?
ResNet, with the help of the Information Technology Services, maintains
the computer labs in the dorms. ResNet Consultants will periodically
check in on these
labs. When a consultant is not present and you have a question or
are experiencing a problem, call ITS at extension 5440.
I have a virus on my computer.
What do I do?
ResNet is not responsible for removal of viruses. ITS does, however,
provide a
free online virus scan. The online virus scan will only work with
internet explorer
and can be reached here http://its.noctrl.edu/students/software/index.shtml Anti-Virus
software may be acquired through the bookstore at a discount price.
Many viruses send themselves
out from the
computers they reside on. These viruses must be dealt with quickly
as, according to
the Acceptable Use Policy, you are responsible for any information
going out to the
network from your computer. You can also purchase Premium
Resnet Services for help with viruses.
Will ResNet help me with printer,
CD-ROM, etc. problems?
ResNet cannot assist users with hardware or software maintenance
of a computer unless it deals directly with a connectivity issue.
If
you need
repairs or assistance with your computer hardware, contact a computer
retailer/distributor. You can purchase Premium
Resnet Services for help too.
I have called and left a message
with ResNet but they have not called me back, what do I do?
ResNet is often very busy with connectivity issues arising with
students. If a Resnet has called and left a voice mail follow
their instructions as to what
to do next. If you called and left a message and have not heard
from your ResNet in a 2 day period, you may call the ResNet extension
and leave another voicemail. Please do not flood
the ResNet mailbox with messages, the more voicemail's there are,
the longer it will take the ResNet to sort through them and begin
to visit the students.
Where can I go for more information?
For more information, please browse the Resnet website, or email
or call the Help Desk at extension 5440.
