Deactivating Automatic Features in Word

Automatic Bullets and Numbers
Automatic Spell and Grammar Check
Using the Automatic Spell and Grammar Check

Automatic Bullets and Numbers:

If you do not want Word to automatically apply bulleted lists and numbered lists, you must change the settings:

  1. Choose Tools, AutoCorrect.
  2. Click on the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
  3. Deselect Automatic bulleted lists.
  4. Deselect Automatic numbered lists.
  5. Choose OK.

Pressing ENTER TWICE will also stop the numbering or bulleting as will clicking on the number or bullet icon on the toolbar.

Automatic Spell and Grammar Check:

Word uses wavy red underlines to indicate possible spelling errors and wavy green underlines to indicate possible grammatical errors. To shut this feature off do the following:

  1. Choose Tools, then Options.
  2. Click on Spelling and Grammar.
  3. Deselect the Check spelling as you type and Check grammar as you type check boxes.

Using the Automatic Spell and Grammar Check:

There are times that the Spell and Grammar check underlines words or sentences that you don’t want to change. If you send them out without telling the Spell or Grammar check to change or ignore those items, the recipients of your document will see red and green wavy lines. To eliminate this problem, use the IGNORE feature in the Spell and Grammar check by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Tools menu.
  2. Click on Spelling & Grammar.
  3. Let the words come up that are underlined and click on Ignore.
  4. The wavy lines will disappear from your document.
