Hardware Guidelines
What kind of computer do I need?
I currently own a computer:
If you are planning on using a computer that you currently own, the minimum configuration for an NCC Network connection is:
- Pentium 233 MHz
- At least 256 MB RAM
- Any Windows Operating System ('95, '98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista, or 7)
- 6 Gigabyte hard drive
- SVGA monitor
- 4x CD-ROM
I'm planning on buying a new computer
If you are in the market for a new computer, keep in mind that technology continues to change rapidly. Purchase a computer that will last for 2-3 years to avoid having to purchase another one in the near future. While there is no specific requirement, ITS recommends the following for any computer being connected to the network:
For Windows XP Professional Operating System:
- 2 GHz or faster processor
- 512 MB RAM
- 32 bit edition
For Vista Operating System:
- 3 GHz or faster processor
- 2 GB RAM
- Any version except "Home Basic"
- 32 bit edition
For Apple Computers:
- 1.6 GHz or faster G4
- 512 MHz RAM
Software:
- Microsoft Office 2003 or later
- IE 6.x or later
Network & Accessories:
- 10/100 BaseT or faster Ethernet connection
- Ethernet cable (7' cable available on campus free of charge)
- 802.11b/g wireless card (laptops)
- USB storage (thumbdrive, jump drive, flash drive) recommended
Wireless:
Although most wireless cards work with the NCC Wireless network, the Atheros wireless card does not . To connect to our wireless network if your computer has an Atheros card, you will need to purchase a Linsys Compact Wireless G USB Adaptor from a computer store.
Although PCs running on NT, OS/2, varieties of UNIX, or Apple/MacIntosh computers can be utilized on campus, there will be certain limitations. Please contact ITS for more details.
