Change Password Notification
Change Password Notification
A password is a secret word or string of characters that is used for authentication, to prove identity or gain access to a resource. They have existed since BC or way, way Before Computers. (Techies put everything in relationship to computer technology.) They were used in early 100 BC by the Roman military. It was not until 1961 that passwords were used with computers. So in 2010 when you are asked to change your password, you are helping keep up a long tradition and also helping prevent identity theft.
Sometimes you were warned that your email, Merlin, or campus computer password for NCC systems was about to expire. Sometimes it was annoying to find out that your password expired with little or no warning. To remedy this situation, ITS will now send you an email to you to let you know that your password for email, Merlin, and campus computers is about to expire. The password email will be generated 14 days, 7 days, 3, days, 2 days, and 1 day before your password is set to expire on these systems. To stop these annoying emails, change your password as soon as you get the first notice.
To help you identify this email from spam, I've replicated the email below:
The Subject Line will be: Notification: Your password will expire in less than x days. (x being 14, 7, 3, 2, 1)
The body of the text will be:
Hello --
This is an automated message from Information Technology Services
at North Central College.
We're just letting you know that your network password -- used for
logging into email, Merlin, and campus computers -- is set to expire
in less than 4 days.
Please change it as soon as possible to avoid being locked out of
your account.
Your new password must be a minimum of 8 characters and contain
at least one number, and cannot be a password you've used in the past
twelve months.
To change your network password when logged into a PC on campus:
1. Hold down the Control, Alt and Delete keys simultaneously on
your keyboard. This will bring up the "Novell Security" window.
2. Click on the "Change Password" button.
3. Enter your old password in the first blank, then your
new password in the second and third blank.
4. Click on OK.
To change your network password from anywhere with Web access:
1. Log into NCC webmail (http://www.northcentralcollege.edu/mail)
2. Click on "Options" in the upper-right-hand corner.
3. A window will pop up; click on the "Password" tab in this
window.
4. Enter your old password in the first blank, then your
new password in the second and third blank.
5. Click on Save.
You should also change your Blackboard password at the same time (the
Blackboard password is stored separately from the network password,
and was not changed when you did the above steps).
To change your Blackboard password:
1. Log into Blackboard (http://blackboard.noctrl.edu).
2. From the main screen, click on "Personal Information."
3. Click on "Change Password."
4. Enter your new password in the two blanks, then click on the
"Submit" button.
If you have any questions, please reply to this message.
