What is a Virus?

A computer virus is a program that is designed to spread itself from computer to computer and installs without the user's consent.  Viruses aim to disrupt the normal function of a computer and often contain destructive payloads such as corrupting/deleting data, stealing CPU capacity, accessing private information, recording keystrokes to harvest passwords, or sending SPAM to a user's contacts.  Viruses can infect computer hard drives, USB drives and other writable media as a way of spreading itself to other devices.

Computer viruses are often contracted through email attachments, Internet downloads, or opening files from another infected device. Viruses can be disguised at images, videos, utilities, sound files etc.
